Every year, Luminext presents the Smart Lighting Award to an organisation that excels in the innovative and smart application of public lighting. This prestigious award encourages innovation, efficient management and sustainability in public spaces. In previous years, the award went to the province of South Holland (2019), the municipality of Gilze en Rijen (2020), the municipality of Zwolle (2021), the municipality of Rotterdam (2022), the municipality of Arnhem (2023) and the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland (2024). In 2025, the Smart Lighting Award was presented to the municipality of Nieuwkoop.
Municipality of Nieuwkoop as a leader in smart lighting
The municipality of Nieuwkoop distinguishes itself as a true leader in the field of smart public lighting. Nieuwkoop is the first municipality in the Netherlands to use the new TALQ connection. With this, the municipality is taking an important step towards further standardisation, flexibility and future-proofing of its public lighting area.
By applying the TALQ standard, the municipality can easily and uniformly control and manage different lighting systems. This ensures greater control, better interchangeability between suppliers and more efficient management of public lighting. The use of this open standard underlines Nieuwkoop’s vision of managing public space in a smart, sustainable and innovative way.
Smart public lighting enables the municipality to better tailor lighting to usage and the environment. This contributes to energy savings, lower management and maintenance costs, and a safe and pleasant living environment for residents and visitors. With this progressive approach, Nieuwkoop demonstrates how technological innovation contributes concretely to social goals.

The Smart Lighting Award 2025 was presented on behalf of Luminext by Robert Tissing to Ms Antoinette Ingwersen, Alderman for Public Space of the municipality of Nieuwkoop.
